Summary:
I have been providing horticultural therapy as a social worker and horticulturist for the past 2 years. During this time, I have worked with several children on the autism spectrum and have observed the benefits that utilising gardening and nature-based activities has had in assisting participants to reach their therapeutic goals.
In my presentation I will provide an outline of general principals, practice approaches, and resources that I have found helpful in supporting individual children on the autism spectrum to facilitate maximum engagement and benefit from their sessions. I will also share some highlights from my work as well as some of the opportunities I encountered to further develop my practice in order to enhance positive outcomes for participants.
It is anticipated that delegates attending this workshop will gain an understanding of the following:
- Applying the person-centred approach to practice and goal setting.
- Working within the NDIS framework
- Using gardening together to develop and practice social skills
- How gardening can assist the development of self-regulation skills
- The importance of care team collaboration
There will be an opportunity towards the end of the session for questions and answers and practice discussion.
